This anniversary of the National Day of France is to be marked by a collection of offerings for her gallant wounded, the funds being administered by the Croix Rouge Français Comité de Londres, of which I am Patroness. I warmly commend this noble enterprise of mercy to the people of the whole Empire. May their generosity forge yet another link between the sister nations." Dans cette formidable guerre, la plus meurtrière que l'histoire ait jamais enregistré, la France a, d s le premier jour, subi le choc de l'Ennemi, et, pendant de longs mois, a été seule à défendre un front couvrant la moitié de ses frontières. Dans ces temps tragiques toute l'énergie de la Nation a été concentrée sur les besoins impérieux de la ligne de combat, les blessés venant ensuite. La situation du peuple Français est extrêmement difficile : Une partie du Pays est envahie, tous les hommes aptes à porter les armes, de 18 à 49 ans, sont sous les drapeaux depuis les premiers jours de la guerre, tout ce qu'il reste d'habitants, jeunes et vieux, hommes et femmes, travaillent avec ardeur aux armements et aux équipements des combattants ; aucun temps n'est laissé aux affaires, et les blessés, en nombre terrifiant, sont confiés à la charité publique. M. H. A. L. Fisher, vice-chancellor de l'Université de Sheffîeld, dans une de ses si intéressantes conférences, nous disait que les Français comptaient environ 800,000 hommes tués. Ce chiffre a été fixé depuis à 1,000,000 d'hommes, par un des Sénateurs Français qui visitèrent Shefïield ces derniers temps. C'était avant l'attaque de Verdun, et ces pertes considérables ne comprenaient pas les manquants, et nous savons ce que ce mot signifie. Si nous comptons quatre malades et blessés par homme tué, nous atteignons le total colossal de 4,000,000 d'hommes, soit un dixième de la population, qui réclament des soins d'autant plus urgents que la bataille sévit toujours avec une intensité toujours croissante. . Le courage des soldats de France ne s'est pas démenti un seul instant depuis plus de deux ans. La conscience qu'ils ont tous de leur devoir est à la hauteur de la cause sainte pour laquelle tant des leurs sont tombés héroïquement : les uns, morts pour la Patrie, les autres blessés, attendant des soins qui leur permettront de combattre à nouveau pour la France et pour ses Alliés. Que ce FRANCE'S DAY soit pour ceux-ci un jour de fête et que, gr ce aux sentiments généreux qui l'honorent la. population de Shefïield accorde largement son aide à l'Oeuvre sublime de La Croix Rouge Française. Et émettons le voeu qu'en sympathie pour la noble Nation alliée, les habitants de Sheffield pavoisent leur demeure aux couleurs de la France, le 23 septembre prochain. FRANCE'S DAY. May we. add something to the eloquent message from Queen Alexandra to ~ j ustify the appeal we make to the population of Sheffield. You ail know what the situation of the French people is :—Part of France invaded, ail able-bodied men gone since the very first days of the War, the remaining inhabitants, old and young, maie and female, pressing forth armainents and equipments of War, 110 time is left for business, and the wounded are entrusted to the public charity in numbers simply appalling. Dr. H. A. L. Fisher in one of his so interesting lectures told us that the French had 800,000 men killed. (This figure was fixed a,t one million men by one of the French Senators who visited this city some time ago). This was before the attack on Verdun, and did not include the missing, and you know, ladies and gentlemen, what missing means ! Therefore, we cannot be far from the truth in estimating at one million, the men killed. Now, if we allow 4 sick and wounded for each killed, we find that the total of men to be attended to has amounted to 4 millions of men, one tenth of the population. This is a huge task for a countrv deprived of its money-earning power. Ladies and Gentlemen, this French population who has and is still supporting the brunt of the assault of our common foe, keeps fighting and working, and, to use the words of Lord Murray of Elibank, amaze the world by their résistance, but the world does not know or realise that their fallen men are in need of clothing, food and surgical stores. The soldiers endure their hardship with fortitude, but to be wounded and left alone because nothing is forthcoming is terrible. It is to relieve their terrible situation that we ask for your sympathy and your assistance at the FRANCE'S DAY, which will become, thanks to your kindness, a fête day for the French wounded.
