Flemish policy, activism and nationalism
During The First World War, Germany acted according to the divide-and-rule principle. By sowing division, it believed, the German position would be strengthened. The Flamenpolitik, or Flemish Policy, intended to exploit long-standing linguistic and political divisions in Belgium, formed an integral part of this strategy.
