Horses at the front
Horses at the front
The European armies possessed impressive cavalry units on the eve of the war. It quickly became clear however that horses were no match for machine guns, barbed wire and artillery. As tanks took their place on the battlefield, horses were employed in supportive roles. Service as a messenger or draught horse didn’t prevent them from taking appalling casualties. Millions of horses lived, and died, side by side with the soldiers in the trenches.
