Laughing at misery
Laughing at misery
Gallows humour is a widespread phenomenon, especially in times of war. In that case, laughing at (your own) misfortune meets a psychological need. Therefore, it is not surprising that a number of Belgian soldier newspapers published humorous articles.
The most conspicuous satirical newspaper was the British ‘Wipers Times’. The paper has moments of satiric genius, commenting on the war through fictitious news items and advertisements.
