Legal status
With News of the Great War, meemoo aims to digitise unique source material from World War I in order to preserve them, make them accessible and distribute them. To achieve this, meemoo has joined forces with several collection-managing institutions.
The bulk of the newspaper articles and illustrations in the News of the Great War archive are NOT signed by an author. Consequently, they are NOT protected by copyright any longer. This is because anonymous works are only protected by copyright in Belgium up to 70 years following publication, after which they become public domain.
A small portion of the digitised newspaper articles and illustrations in the News of the Great War archive ARE signed. They may or may not already belong to the public domain. Signed works DO have copyright protection for up to 70 years following the author’s death, after which the copyright is automatically transferred to the heirs.
Meemoo has been unable to ascertain which writers, photographers and illustrators whose signed newspaper articles and illustrations were included in the News of the Great War archive died more than 70 years ago, or whether there are heirs to whom their copyright may have been transferred.
As a result, meemoo and the collection-managing institutions CANNOT guarantee that all signed newspaper articles and illustrations in the News of the Great War archive are in fact free of copyright. Individuals wanting to make copyright claims on reproduced documents and articles included in the News of the Great War archive can contact meemoo by sending an e-mail to support@meemoo.be.
Reuse
Users should be aware of the legal status of the newspaper articles and illustrations in the News of the Great War archive. Sole responsibility for the reuse of this material lies with the users, who shall safeguard meemoo and the collection-managing institutions concerned against any third-party claims based on that use.
1) The following conditions for reuse apply to the material in the News of the Great War archive made available by all providers, except for the State Archives/CegeSoma, the Royal Library of Belgium and the War Heritage Institute/Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History:
Meemoo and its providers have made the following material from the News of the Great War archive AVAILABLE under a CC0 statement:

• the metadata
• photographic reproductions of UNSIGNED newspaper articles and illustrations
• the OCR of UNSIGNED newspaper articles and illustrations

The sources listed above may be used by anyone for any purpose. Meemoo kindly requests that users mention meemoo and the names of the institution(s) managing the collection(s) in all instances of reuse, as a sign of appreciation of their work, as is done in the News of the Great War archive. However it is not obligatory to do so.

If users decide to further distribute this material, meemoo requests that third parties are also informed that the legal status of the material may be unclear. Moreover, meemoo kindly requests that users mention meemoo and the names of the institution(s) managing the collection(s) in all instances of reuse, as a sign of appreciation of their work, as is done in the News of the Great War archive. However it is not obligatory to do so.
2) The following conditions for reuse apply to the material in the News of the Great War archive made available by the State Archives/CegeSoma, the Royal Library of Belgium and the War Heritage Institute/Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History:
When reusing photographic reproductions, OCR and metadata from both anonymous and signed newspapers or newspaper articles made available by the State Archives/CegeSoma, the Royal Library of Belgium and the War Heritage Institute/Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History, it is obligatory for the name of the provider to be mentioned, along with its logo where applicable.
Users bear full responsibility for reuse of the material, in accordance with the legislation in force. If users decide to further distribute this material, the State Archives/CegeSoma (which launched The Belgian War Press) request that third parties are also informed that the legal status of some of the material may be unclear.
