First aid for wounded soldiers
At the start of the war no country had given serious thought to the issue of medical care. The unseen scale of combat meant hospitals were overwhelmed and unable to take care of the wounded. Many died needlessly as a result. Not until the end of the war did a professional and well organised medical service take shape.
