War industry
The First World War was the world’s first industrial conflict. Courage or tactical prowess on the battlefield were no longer decisive in victory. Instead the economic and logistical capacity of a nation became crucial. The speed at which resources were produced, troops recruited and losses replaced decided which side would win. Through blockades, attacks on merchant shipping and forced labour both sides tried to gain the upper hand.
