Heldenhulde
Heldenhulde
During the First World War tens of thousands of Belgian soldiers died at the front. At first they were only put to rest in temporary graves.
Several Flamingants wanted to honour their friends more permanently. They founded 'Heldenhulde' (literally: 'tribute to heroes') and created concrete tombstones in the shape of a Celtic cross. The tombstones were decorated with the image of a blue footed bird ('Blauwvoet'), which is the symbol of the Flemish (student)movement, and the letters AVV-VVK (Alles voor Vlaanderen - Vlaanderen voor Kristus, literally: 'everything for Flanders, Flanders for Christ').
Read more about the history and symbolism of 'Heldenhulde' in the blog of the ADVN.
