Op Het Archief kan je zoeken op trefwoorden zoals naam, plaats, gebeurtenis of een of meerdere willekeurige termen. Je kan je zoekopdracht nog verder verfijnen:
Gebruik aanhalingstekens om exact te zoeken op een woord. Bijvoorbeeld: hond geeft je alle woorden waarin hond voorkomt (honden, honderd, geschonden). “hond” toont je enkel de exacte overeenkomsten.
Gebruik aanhalingstekens om exact te zoeken op een woordgroep. Bijvoorbeeld: "vrije stem" of “la belgique independante”.
Gebruik + of - om een woord verplicht te maken (met +) of uit te sluiten (met -). Bijvoorbeeld: +markt -zilver zoekt naar tekstfragmenten waarin markt voorkomt, maar niet zilver.

Je kan je zoekopdracht ook verfijnen via de uitklapbare filters links van de zoekresultaten.
Type: filter op document, op blog of op collectie
Onderwerp: filter op onderwerpen gelinkt aan de Abraham krantencatalogus
Publicatiedatum: filter op publicatiedatum
Reeks of titel: filter op krantenreeks of krantentitel
Genre: filter op gedrukte, getypte of handgeschreven documenten
Taal: filter op de taal waarin het document is opgesteld
Aanbieder: filter op de aanbieder van het archiefmateriaal
Belangrijk om weten: jouw zoekresultaten
Het systeem maakt bij je zoekopdracht een inschatting van de relevantie voor jou. Resultaten die volgens het systeem het meest overeenstemmen met je zoekvraag worden als eerste weergegeven. Je kan deze volgorde wijzigen (voorbeeld op datum of alfabetisch) met behulp van de dropdown rechts boven de zoekresultaten.
Alle gedrukte kranten zijn doorzoekbaar op tekst dankzij Optical Character Recognition (OCR). OCR zorgt voor een automatische omzetting van gedrukte letters in digitale leesbare vorm. Let wel: af en toe zal je misschien wat vreemde tekens zien verschijnen in je zoekresultaten. Dat komt omdat OCR wel eens moeite heeft met de juiste herkenning van de karakters. De kans bestaat dat woorden niet correct herkend worden. Bij het zoeken kan het dus zijn dat je andere resultaten krijgt dan verwacht.
Opgepast: Handgeschreven teksten kunnen niet gelezen worden door OCR. Deze zul je daarom niet op tekst kunnen doorzoeken.
