Rik Wouters was one of the most famous Belgian fauvist artists, known for their vibrant colours and simplified shapes. At the outbreak of war in August 1914 Wouters served in the Belgian army, where he witnessed the fall of both Liège and Antwerp. By the end of the year he ended up in the Netherlands, where he died from cancer in July 1916.
